Sonam Kapoor was a teenager, studying in Singapore when she started gaining weight. In just 2 years, she managed to get from a healthy kid to a fat teen. She then started suffering from obesity.
Sonam, herself, explained -“I had every issue related to weight that I could have. I was unhealthy, I had bad skin, and I had hair growing on my face!” Her obesity led to her being diagnosed with borderline diabetes and polycystic ovarian disease.
Sonam came back to India weighing almost 90 kilograms. She assisted Sanjay Leela Bhansali for the movie Black. From then, things started changing for Sonam.
The weight loss journey
While working on Black, Bhansali expressed interest in casting Sonam as the leading lady in his next film, Saawariya, but advised her to lose weight.
“I never planned a career in films. I neglected my diet and I put on so much of weight” Sonam says.
But it was Mr. Bhansali’s confidence in her that inspired her. She knew that she had to make the project successful. So she turned her attention to weight loss. She then went on and lost almost 35 kg, in the period of 2 years.
A strict diet and exercise regime followed. But it wasn’t as easy as it sounds.
Back then, her dad, Anil Kapoor, who is super fit even in his 60s, used to tease her by calling her ‘Latina Papita’.
“It was my mother, Sunitha Kapoor, who helped me initially to get rid of my excess weight.” Sonam says. Her mother is against over-eating and kept Sonam away from stuff like sweets, fried items, chocolates that she loved to munch on.
Looking at her now, you will assume that she must starve herself for maintaining such slim figure. But Sonam doesn’t believe in diets and eats everything in moderation. She has a dietary routine of low-carb, high protein six-small-meals-a-day and keeps herself hydrated throughout the day.
